The Art and Science of Writing a Prescription by an Ophthalmologist
The Art and Science of Writing a Prescription by an Ophthalmologist
The clinical examination for a spectacle power lens is called refraction. All eye specialists are perfectionists besides being surgeons. But the science of refraction is also given as a clinical course to non-medical persons. It is called optometry and includes refraction and the making of spectacle glasses and their fitting into frames. The optometry course is of two or three years all over the world. Nobody, except an eye specialist or an optometrist, is authorised to test eyes though in the hard trade world of today every salesman claims to be an oculometrist. The oculometrist, however, always seeks the help of an ophthalmic surgeon when a problem involves more than eve testing. I would like to emphasise that there is no alternative treatment by way of drugs to substitute glasses. In all cases, glasses must be accepted as a tonic for the eyes.
Types of Glasses worn and the Purpose they Serve
lasses with Minus (-) Number (Short-sight)
A minus power is used to increase vision for long distance. A person with a minus power is called short-sighted.
Short-sightedness implies a good vision for close work only. A short-sighted person may see quite well without glasses when it comes to close work like reading and writing but is blind for long distance. If his number is high, he holds books very close to read clearly. The power of these glasses may be as much as -7, -10, -15, or even more in exceptional cases. The wearer of minus glasses must see that he uses his glasses constantly to keep his vision normal and eyes healthy.
The minus number has a tendency to increase over time, so much so that from -1 it may go up to -6 at an alarming speed, causing the wearer to worry and wonder why the number is increasing even though he or she is wearing glasses. The increase in number is a natural phenomenon in short-sighted eyes. It increases as a child’s height- increases with the growth of the bones. There is nothing one can do to stop it. In 60-70 per cent cases such a condition is hereditary. When the glasses become unsatisfactory, a check¬up must be undertaken and changes made from time to time. Once the sight improves to 6/6 or 6/9 with glasses, however high the number otherwise is, the eye is healthy and should not cause any alarm.
In the case of higher numbers (-7 to -12) the person must take precaution and avoid strenuous exercises which strain the eye, and intensive close work, particularly at night. This will not prevent the power from increasing but will prevent other complications (read Chapter No. 11 on myopia). In people with numbers -12 to -20 the thickness and weight of glasses do not allow vision to reach the normal 6/6. Some inherent weakness of sight remains. These persons need the utmost care and help.
Glasses with (+) Plus Number (Long-sight)
A plus power with low numbers is required for close work. Where the higher powers of +2, +3, +4, etc., are required, glasses need to be worn constantly. There are special plus (+) glasses for the middle aged group of 40-42 years (see Chapter on Bifocal).
Compound Glasses
Compound glasses” is a commonly heard name among spectacle wearers. A compound glass is a spectacle glass which has simple spherical power glass combined with an astigmatic power with an axis (cylindrical). The two are cemented together by the manufacturer.
A compound glass is usually meant to be worn constantly, day and night, to avoid eye strain and headaches. Please follow the figures (on next page) for various kinds of spectacles:
Making and Fitting Spectacle Lenses by an Optometrist (Optician)
The art and science of changing a written prescription to spectacle lenses, fitted into a frame, by a scientifically correct process are the job of an optometrist — called an optician by the layman. (Fig. 9.1 for all types of glasses).
No effort should be spared in the making and correct fitting of lenses in appropriate frames. The comfort and relaxation of the eye depend on this precise fitting. There is considerable and highly specialised optical-physics involved in making spectacles. Their correct fitting gives comfort and relaxation to the eyes and their correct power gives improved vision. The choice of an “optician” should be based on the reputation, maturing experience and courteous service rendered to a patient along with a balance of humanitarian element and business acumen.

RECYCLE EYEGLASSES, LIONS CLUB URGES John W. Harmon Special to The Jeffersonian Published: February 22, 2012 1:00PM
The Cambridge Lions Club is preparing for its annual music and comedy show. The show is one of the club's main fund raising events. The net income is used to help those in the local community who need assistance in paying for eye care and eyeglasses.
The Lions Clubs International became "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" after Helen Keller challenged them at the international convention held at Cedar Point in 1925.
Keller became blind and deaf after an illness at the age of 18 months. With the help of her teacher, Ann Sullivan, Keller learned to read hand sign language. She later learned to speak and became an advocate for people with physical challenges.
To help those in other countries, the Lions Club collects eyeglasses that are no longer needed. These eyeglasses are taken to the Ohio State University College of Optometry where student volunteers sort them, analyze the prescriptions, and label and box them for later use.
Your used glasses, sunglasses, and hard cases can be given to any Lions Club member or dropped off at the Scottish Rite Theater during the music and comedy show.
Lion Glenn Nicholson collects the glasses that have been donated and delivers them to Ohio State.
"With the economy the way it is we have had a big increase in the number of people needing assistance with the cost of eye care," said show co-chair Bryant Ficken. "We are making a special effort this year to ask members of the community to help us raise the funds we need to continue providing eyeglasses."
Co-chair Dave Conrath said local residents and businesses can help by taking out patron or sponsor ads for the annual Lions Music and Comedy Show March 29-31.
Patron ads are $25, a quarter page program ads are $50 and sponsor ads are $250 and include four tickets and a 30-second ad at the show. For ad information, contact Dave Conrath at 432-1147.
This year's show presenter is Fairdale Auto Sales.
Tickets for the show will go on sale to the public in March. Tickets will be available online at www.cambridgelions.com and at Country Bits on Wheeling Avenue. This year's show theme is "Go Hollywood."
Dave Conrath said rehearsals for the Lions Chorus will continue every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on Eighth Street. The public is invited to participate in the chorus, no auditions needed.
Funds raised by the Lions Club also help the diabetes education support group at the hospital and other club projects.

Eyes online: Can you get better glasses from the web? Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/02/21/eyes-online-can-get-better-glasses-from-web/#ixzz1n6u0QAZj
Everything is supposed to be better online. But would you trust someone online with your eyesight?
Historically, getting the proper prescription has been an arcane, expensive, but essential art. If you can't see the blackboard properly, you'll fail the test. If you're a little fuzzy on the road you might end up killing a family of five. Unfortunately, glasses can be astoundingly expensive. Fancy Danish frames with ultra-thin lenses can set you back hundreds of dollars.
So I decided to compare the old-fashioned method -- the local trusted optometrist -- to some trendy, online eyeglass shops, which offer frames and lens for hundreds less, to see which was more reliable (and safer).
The first stop with my new prescription was Square in the Eye, a neighborhood optometrist. Courteous staff and an excellent assortment of frames and styles in the store made the visit easy and comfortable. A helpful clerk took my pupil measurement (the horizontal distance between your pupils), a copy of the prescription, and my old frames. However, the cost of the high-index, anti-glare lens totaled $271. Ouch.
My next stop was online at a generation M-oriented fashion eyewear store called Eyefly. The company offers glasses and frames for just $99 -- less than half the price of similar frames at so-called discount houses like LensCrafters.
For the price, Eyefly offers anti-glare polycarbonate prescription glasses and sunglasses in a variety of frames, ranging from owlish Philip Johnson-styles to Risky Business shades. There are even aviator knock-offs.
But choosing the right frames can be tricky. While you can superimpose glasses on a picture of yourself that you upload to the site, it's still extremely difficult to find a pair that really, truly suits you -- which is why people usually bring along a sympathetic friend: “Do these frames make my butt look fat?”
The second issue entering my prescription was that I didn't have the proper measurement for my pupil distance, something usually done in a store. So I had to measure it myself with a ruler. This turns out to be like cutting your own hair: You don't always achieve the best results. (My measurement was close enough, however.) I ended up ordering a set of prescription sunglasses.
The final stop was Warby Parker, an eyewear fashion haus that takes its name from Kerouac characters and specializes in vintage designer frames. Frames and prescription anti-reflective lens are just $95. The site doesn't yet offer prescription sunglasses but it's only been in business for two years.
Warby Parker offers two solutions to the problem of choosing frames. The company can send you up to five frames to try on at home for five days, then you send the frames back using a pre-paid label and order the ones that worked for you. Or you can visit one of the company's nine showrooms across the country (book an appointment first).
I visited a showroom. The staff were helpful, acting like a trusted friend while I fretted over a dozen different frames -- I'm picky. Visiting the showroom was a smart move since the frames I liked online made me look like a wall-eyed chemistry teacher in real life. And one of the sales people took my pupil measurement for me. I committed to a pair of tortoise-shell frames.
Interestingly, all three pairs of glasses arrived within a day of each other, taking about a week to get the prescription filled (even though the online places only guarantee 10-day delivery). So the local store had no speed advantage over the online world. All three pairs were in excellent condition when they arrived, and I loved each frame. The online stores also let you return them free of charge if you're not satisfied.
However, none of the frames fit perfectly, including my old frames. Here's where the local store had an advantage. The sales people quickly and expertly adjusted my old frames, and I was set. The only way to adjust the Eyefit sunglasses was to throw myself on the mercy of Square in the Eye. They adjusted those glasses too, without charging me.
With the Warby Parker glasses I felt I had made a truly “fashion forward” personal statement -- but I couldn't see properly through them, as though I were watching a bad 3D movie. I dropped into the Warby Parker showroom (no appointment needed this time) for an optometrist exam.
That visit raised another issue. My prescription was correct, but the "optical center" of the glasses wasn't quite right for the frames I had chosen and how they sat on my face. OC measurements aren't standard and it doesn't affect vision through most frames. In fact, none of the many online shops even have a place to enter an OC measurement, and my local store didn't ask about it either.
Fortunately, Warby Parker's optometrist took the new measurements and ordered a new set. Again, no charge. The whole process instilled further confidence in their service and support, and I'd be willing to order another pair there any time.
Like so many online businesses, the optometry space is clearly in for some disruption -- just as video stores have disappeared and book stores are a dying breed. But the online-only approach of sites like Eyefly cannot match the service and support of the local store -- a very important consideration when it comes to your eyesight.
Warby Parker's unique approach, combining personal service (assuming you live near a showroom) and online cost efficiencies, makes for a winning combination. It may be a lesson in online retailing: If you really want to do it right, you can't completely do without the brick and mortar stores.

ABO review course offered at ASOA meeting
ABO review course offered at ASOA meeting
Fairfax, VA—The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) review course will be provided at the annual congress of the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators (ASOA).
The 2012 ASOA congress will be held April 20 to 24 at McCormick Place West in Chicago. The ABO review course will take place Friday, April 20.
The 8-hour review course is designed to benefit opticians who are preparing for the ABO certification examination. A separate course registration for this full-day program is available, and attendees of the course do not need to register for the entire ASOA Congress. Registration is available at www.asoa.org.
The ABO review course was delivered for the first time ever at an ophthalmology conference during the 2011 ASOA annual meeting. This year, it will complement the Optical Forum at the meeting. The Optical Forum provides 18 hours of dispensary education. The ABO approves 12 of the hours for continuing education credit.
“The ABO-approved courses will allow certified opticians who attend the meeting to obtain all their hours in one place and at one time,” said Arthur De Gennaro, Optical Forum program chair, ASOA Congress. “By providing ABO-accredited education, ASOA hopes to encourage administrators, opticians, and ophthalmologists to attend courses together. This will foster better operational and strategic planning for the dispensary.”
