Buy Local: Scheme's benefits clear for all to see

With retail experts predicting that the Great British high street could soon become a thing of the past unless something is done to preserve it, the message from local business leaders is clear – “use us or lose us.”
That is why the Grimsby Telegraph has teamed up with the Lincolnshire branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to launch Your Life: Buy Local – a campaign to show you how making small changes to your spending habits can help save the high street and put more money back into the local economy.
As part of the campaign, we have launched the Buy Local loyalty card, which local shops and traders, like the one featured here, are signing up to in order to give you discounts until the end of the year, to encourage people to shop locally.
A SCARTHO business has perfect vision for the future thanks to the Grimsby Telegraph's Buy Local campaign.
The owner of Scartho Eyecare, Kim Brown, has seen a 15 per cent increase in trade since the opticians joined the scheme, and with the boost she has her sights set on expansion.
She is offering free eye tests and a 10 per cent discount off spectacles to loyalty card holders at the centre in Waltham Road.
The firm was set up more than two years ago, and now it has three specialist optometrists and about 3,000 customers on its books.
"The Buy Local campaign has been brilliant," said Kim.
"People who have put eyecare on the back burner have been coming in and taking advantage of the free eye test. They have read it in the Grimsby Telegraph and are immediately making a saving of £30."
The centre is fully booked three days each week and prospective customers are advised to book in appointments with the specialists. The tests can be done on the NHS.
Customers can also enjoy free parking and the centre is all on the ground floor and easily accessible.
Kim said the business offers re-glazed spectacles unlike many other multiple chains of opticians.
She said: "We don't want people to have to pay out when it is not necessary."
The businesswoman offers budget glasses from £20 up to the designer glasses with brand names of Converse, Givenchy and Lacoste.
Kim said: "We do everything from the popular bold, dark plastic rims to traditional styles and a lot of hip-trendy glasses."
She said it was important for parents to ensure their children are regularly checked.
That has helped them get used to having check-ups throughout their early years to potentially identify all kinds of conditions including diabetes and glaucoma.
She added: "We have had superb feedback from our customers about our service."
She has male and female optometrists to serve customers.
"People can be nervous at first. But we ensure a thorough test and there is never any obligation to buy anything," she said.
"With business going so well we are looking at expansion."
